Cannot complete this action SharePoint 2010

One of colleague who is working in a different organization called me yesterday for SharePoint help. He told me that he was working on semantic restores and accidently restored the library pages i.e. displayform.aspx, editform.aspx, newform.aspx etc… Due to this action, he was not able to open the document library and was getting the following error message:
Cannot complete this action
Please try again.

There are so many ways by which we can troubleshoot this issue:
1.   Are we able to open the document library by means of SP site?
-open the SharePoint site
-view all site content
-Under document libraries section
-you will see that affected document library
-click on it and check the results
As per my knowledge, it has to reflect the same error message.
2.   Try to map your SharePoint site by means of shared drive concept
-How to create this shared drive?
·         Click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Map network drive...
·         In the Map Network Drive dialog box, click Connect to a Web site that you can use to store your documents and pictures.
·         In the Add Network Location wizard, click next.
·         Click Choose a Custom Network Location, and then click next.
·         In the Internet or Network Address box, paste in the site address you had copied to the Clipboard, and then click next.
·         Enter a name for the network location.

-Once the shared drive created then you can copy all the documents which are present in you library that is not working. So it means that there will be no DATA LOSS J that’s the main thing, correct?
3.   Custom lists and libraries section on your SharePoint site
-Open the SharePoint 2010 site collection on which you are working
-site actions
-site settings
-Under site administration
-custom list and libraries
-select the library in which we are facing the problem
-once you click on it then it will redirected to library settings page
-by which of this page, we can create a new view
-try to create a new view and your problem will be fixed.
The number of options which are explained above will definitely helps you to prevent data loss as well as do a effective troubleshooting that will fix the issue J
After all of this also, if the issue remains then I am always there to help youJ
Please let me know in case of any queries/questions. I would be more than happy to help you as well as resolves your issues J
Thank you.

  1. Hi Amol,
    your posts are really helpful.
In my case, I am receiving "Cannot complete this action" message on MOSS 2007 subsite while I am creating a site in it. All other operations are successful. One thing I observed is that the bread crumb of the defective sub site is broken. What could it be? Do let me know if you need more information.

  2. could you please check the settings page for the site on which you are getting "cannot complete the action" ?

I am pretty much sure that the site has been successfully created and if we browse the settings page as http:///_layouts/settings.aspx then it will open without any issues

now append the defective URL with _layouts/changesitemasterpage.aspx

when this page will open then select the option inherit site master page from parent of the site"

select for both the sections and select OK

check the results and let me know in case of any further queries. thanks for your patience

  3. Hi Amol, Thanks for getting back.
I have tried changing/inheriting master page without success.

My site structure is like this:
    Accounting [Site Collection1]
    FuA_Accounting.de [Sub Site1]
hauptbuch [Sub Site of Sub Site1]

I am getting 'Cannot complete this action' when I try to create a sub site in 'hauptbuch'

  4. Okay, some other way then :-)

    some questions:
-are you able to browse the system pages of the subsite that you have created under hauptbuch?
-If yes then go to the site settings-> site features->activate Publishing infratsructure feature

If the above conditions are not working then if go to the view all site content of hauptbuch then can you see the created subsite over there ?

If yes then create a network share for hauptbuch subsite

Once the network share will be created then you can see the created subsite also within this structure

so what you need to do now:

copy the deafult.aspx page of hauptbuch subsite and paste inside the created subsite folder which is throwing an error

Please share the results and let me know in case of any queries regarding the above mentioned information.

  5. Hi Amol, See my answeres inline:
-are you able to browse the system pages of the subsite that you have created under hauptbuch? -- Yes
-If yes then go to the site settings-> site features->activate Publishing infratsructure feature -- Activated the feature [Still not able to create sub site]

If the above conditions are not working then if go to the view all site content of hauptbuch then can you see the created subsite over there ? -- No

If yes then create a network share for hauptbuch subsite

Once the network share will be created then you can see the created subsite also within this structure

so what you need to do now:

copy the deafult.aspx page of hauptbuch subsite and paste inside the created subsite folder which is throwing an error -- No go, as the sub site was not created at all.

Please share the results and let me know in case of any queries regarding the above mentioned information.

Try to create one more subsite underneath-hauptbuch, as soon as it throws an error then please refer the logs(12 folder) and share it here so that i can check and get back to you. i am pretty much sure that logs will reflects exact cause behind this. Thanks for your patience.
