How to find out site ID

How to find out the ID of a site collection, subsite and list
While working on one ticket, I did some research and fetched some things regarding ID’s.

Site collection, Subsite and List are important entities which are widely used on day to day basis.

There are times when you need to find out the Id/Guid of a site collection, subsite or list as per the project requirements, analysis of guids will be very useful to resolve many issues in SharePoint environments.

Here is my analysis regarding this as How to find out the ID/GUID of the above mentioned entities:

How to find out the ID of a site collection:

1.     Open the Central Administration
2.     Application Management
3.     SharePoint Site Management
4.     site collection quotas and locks
5.     Select the appropriate site collection (Please refer the following screenshot) and you will get the ID of that specific site collection.

How to find out the ID of a subsite:
1.     Save the current site as site template [.STP extension]
2.     Save it to disk somewhere.
3.     Now, navigate to that location and rename the file to .CAB extension.
4.     Extract the CAB file and find the manifest.xml file.
5.     Now, in the file check for the site ID/TemplateID string and get the value.
6.     Navigate to end of this post for the TemplateID to Name mapping.

How to find out the List ID:
1.     Navigate to the SharePoint list using the browser.
2.     Select the Settings + List Settings menu command.
3.     Copy the URL from the browser address bar into Notepad. It will look something like:

Delete everything before and including “List=”.
Change “%7B” to “{”
Change all “%2D” to “-“
Chnage “%7D” to “}”
You are now left with the Id:

Ambiguous name detected: tmp.dde

Guys,

Today I m very happy to write this article, not because I have resolved this issue, not because I have done research on this, not because I did any debugging on this... but the reason behind this is-One of my colleague named “Vinesh Kapoor” has resolved this issue and registers his name by making an entry in the knowledgebase. As I always share the articles to benefit the SharePoint communities so here are the details:

Problem Description: Whenever user tries to open a word document in SharePoint, she get the error "Ambiguous name detected: tmp.dde"

Error message: Ambiguous name detected: tmp.dde

Resolution:
1) Close the entire word document and rename NORMAL.DOTM
2) You will find that under : \Documents and Settings\<your account>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
3) Open a blank word document and close it.
4) Check the location again, you will find that normal.dotm will be created.
5) Ask the user to open the word document from the SharePoint site and it worked fine

Reference to the same, a simple question comes to my mind as what is the function of this NORMAL.DOT file, if this file does not exist on the computer then will it make any difference, can we make changes inside this file, if we make any changes then does it impact the normal functioning of word files???

Questions will be many but let’s try to understand the basics so that we will understand the base functioning.

Here is my analysis:
What is NORMAL.DOT FILE?-The normal.dot file is the default Microsoft Word TEMPLATE. This file is used to store the default settings such as font, font size, content of a file, etc. that is used with each of the Microsoft Word file you open. This can be useful if you find yourself having to adjust the font type, font size, or other setting each time you open Microsoft Word.

How do I modify the normal.dot file?
-Open the normal.dot file and change the settings you wish to adjust. For example, if you want the default font size to be 14 each time you open Microsoft Word open the normal.dot file change the font size to 14 and save the document.

If you have any queries/questions regarding the above mentioned information then please let me know.I would be more than HAPPY to help you as well as RESOLVES your issues, Thank you J

Code blocks are not allowed in this file

One of my user has opened a ticket with my team by mentioning “He is not able to browse his SharePoint Team Site and getting the below mentioned error message.

Problem Description: Not able to browse the SharePoint site

Error Message: An error occurred during the processing of /site/My Documents/Forms/Alldocuments.aspx. Code blocks are not allowed in this file.
Here is my analysis regarding the same:
    1) Check the site settings page is opening or not.
How to check that? - Site URL/_layouts/settings.aspx
   2) If you are using any specialized master page in your environment then make sure it is properly selected under the master page galleries
How to check that? – Site actions-site settings-Under look and feel-master page galleries
   3) Check the default.aspx page is existing or not
How to check that?

-Open your site, it’s quite obvious that you will get error message
-Be on that same page
-Control + O (from your keyboard)
-This will open the shared view of your site
-if you see the default.aspx page their then go ahead and take the backup of that page in the same location
-It wills create-default1.aspx—this is fine and we are on right track
-In this same shared location, you can see the created subsites i.e. the child sites which are created underneath
-Go to any of the subsite by means of shared drive and copy the default.aspx and paste it at the root location
-Try t browse the site and check the results
-Your site is up and running without any issuesJ

If you have any queries/questions then please let me know.
I would be more than HAPPY to help you as well as RESOLVES your issues, Thank youJ

The filtering process could not be initialized. Verify that the file extension is a known type and is correct

Presently I am working on one search issue which is severity-1 and working towards the resolution. Here is my analysis and research that I did on this issue. If anybody has any suggestions then please append the same. I would be more than HAPPY to implement and discuss the same so that SharePoint community will benefit the same. Thank you

This is the site link: URL which is affected and reflecting in the crawl logs: /sites/ccas/applications/secore/shared%20documents/settlements/projects/2010/r1/20091005-%20ccas-so1%20owni%20gw%20correction/project%20plan/200919590_plan_owni_correction.xls

Error Message: The filtering process could not be initialized. Verify that the file extension is a known type and is correct

Problem Description: Search is not working and getting the above mentioned error message. Its happening only for one files i.e. .XLS

Action Taken:
1) Checked the file extension is added or not (How?-Please refer the following steps)
+Central administration
+Shared Service provided
+Search settings
+File Extensions
Reference: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc262700(office.12).aspx

2) Checked file name has any invalid characters but its proper one and no issues with it.

3) Checked IFilter which was released after the initial release of SP2007
reference: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=60C92A37-719C-4077-B5C6-CAC34F4227CC&displaylang=en

4) This is not PPTX/any 2007 document so thats why i haven't checked this(Link to Microsoft 2010 Filter Packs): http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=5cd4dcd7-d3e6-4970-875e-aba93459fbee&displaylang=en

5) The document does not consist of any embedded links as per this reference:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/russmax/archive/2010/11/11/sharepoint-2007-search-trying-to-crawl-office-documents-that-contain-embedded-links.aspx

6) Resetting the crawl index and run a full crawl is not a feasible solution as we cannot do this in production environment.

7) As per this link: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepoint2010general/thread/2906b07f-291d-4ac0-8b3f-d47166cb309d/
We cannot disable the search service and reset & configure everything

The only thing that we can try at this moment is: convert the document to .XLSX and do incremental crawl and check the results

This web site does not support workflows created by SharePoint Designer

Workflows help people to collaborate on documents and to manage project tasks by implementing business processes on documents and items in a Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 site. Workflows help organizations to adhere to consistent business processes, and they also improve organizational efficiency and productivity by managing the tasks and steps involved in business processes. This enables the people who perform these tasks to concentrate on performing the work rather than managing the workflow.

Would like to share some resolution details for the workflow issue that I had resolved recently. here are the details:

Error Message: This web site does not support workflows created by SharePoint Designer

Cause: You do not have the permissions necessary to create workflows.

Resolution:
1) In Office SharePoint Designer 2007, in the Folder List, right-click the Workflows library, and then click Properties.
2) Click the Security tab.
3) Click Manage permissions using the browser.
4) In the browser, on the Permissions: Workflows page, click New, and then click Add Users.
5) Add the user to the list.

If you have any queries/questions regarding the mentioned information then please let me know.
