OneNote has encountered a problem and cannot complete the action

Using shared notebooks with SharePoint sites. When Office OneNote 2007 notebooks are stored in a shared location, such as a SharePoint library, multiple users can simultaneously access shared notes and contribute to them on an ongoing basis. A library is a central location on a SharePoint site where people store and manage their files.

When you share a notebook on a SharePoint site, you can use the features of a library to manage and share your notebooks. You can manage who has permission to view the notebook or contribute notes. You can store additional information about the notebook or its pages, such as the department name or project number. You can also track versions of the notebook, so that people can view or restore an earlier version if needed and receive updates when the content changes by using alerts or RSS Feeds.

The 2007 Microsoft Office Suites provide the best level of rich, contextual integration with Windows SharePoint Services and Office SharePoint Server, allowing users to interact with SharePoint sites without leaving their Office programs and to have two-way synchronization with collaborative information and documents as well as business data stored on SharePoint sites.

Problem Description:
§  Synchronization problem between SharePoint and Office OneNote application.
§  Updates are not being reflected on the users end/not able to see the current data i.e. correct versioning information
§  After having proper permissions at the site level but users are still getting read only notebooks

Business Data Catalog

The BDC is essentially a catalog of business applications that are of interest to SharePoint Server 2007 users, and it bridges the gap between the portal and business applications by bringing in key data from various applications to SharePoint sites, lists, search, and user profiles. The BDC is the key infrastructural component around which most of the other business data features of SharePoint Server 2007 are built. Administrators can register business applications in the BDC, after which the data in the application is immediately available to SharePoint through the business data features described below. A key requirement for each registered business application is an XML-based metadata model that describes the application programming interfaces (API) of the application or the schema of the database that maps to business objects (e.g. customer) and properties (e.g. name) that a SharePoint user can understand. These metadata models can be easily created by DBAs or database developers.

SharePoint Server 2007 ships with four out-of-the-box Business Data Web Parts: Business Data List, Business Data Items, Business Data Related List, and Business Data Actions. These Web Parts rely on the Business Data Catalog, and their main purpose is to display business data in a portal application without the need for any programming. Moreover, these Web Parts are generic and can show any type of data (entity) registered in the Business Data Catalog.
These Web Parts support Web Part Connections, which enable Master-Detail types of data display – again, without any programming. For example, you can display customers and their details using the BusinessDataList and BusinessDataItems Web Parts.

Web Part
Description
Business Data List
Web Part
Displays a list of entity instances from a business application registered in the Business Data Catalog. For example, you can use a Business Data List Web Part to display all the customers or orders from the AdventureWorksDW database.
Business Data Items
Web Part
Displays the details of an entity instance from a business application. For example, you can use a Business Data Items Web Part to display the details of a particular customer or order from the AdventureWorksDW database.
Business Data Related List
Web Part
Displays a list of related entity instances from a business application. For example, you can use a Business Data Related List Web Part to display all the orders for a particular customer from the AdventureWorksDW database.
Business Data Actions
Web Part
Displays a list of actions associated with an entity as defined in the Business Data Catalog. For example, you can use a Business Data Actions Web Part to display all the actions that portal users can perform on the Customer entity. Some examples of these actions are to send e-mail to a customer or edit the address of a customer.

Business Data in Lists
Windows SharePoint Services V3 provides custom field types. SharePoint Server 2007 leverages this feature to provide a new field type called Business Data that is available to all lists in SharePoint Server 2007. The Business Data field type enables users to add data from business applications registered in the Business Data Catalog to any SharePoint list. For example, in your RFP (Request for Proposal) Document Library, you can add a Business Data column to the document properties that specifies the customer who issued the RFP. This enables users to view the customer’s details and perform actions associated with them from within the Document Library.

Business Data Actions
You can define actions for each entity in the Business Data Catalog. Some examples of actions for a customer entity are to send e-mail to a customer or to edit the address of a customer. Business Data Catalog implements actions as links that allow you to navigate to a URL directly from the page where the entity or Business Data column is displayed. For example, these links can open Web pages, display the native graphical user interfaces (GUI) of line-of-business applications, and launch Microsoft® Office InfoPath® forms.

Business Application Search
By leveraging the Business Data Catalog, the Search Center feature of SharePoint Server 2007 can gather and index data from all of the registered business applications and provide full-text searching. For example, after you register the AdventureWorksDW sample database from SQL Server 2005 in the Business Data Catalog, the Search Center feature can crawl the database and return customer data in search results. In addition, the Search Center feature’s extensibility enables you to create customized search experiences. For example, you can create a Customers tab in the Search Center where users can search strictly for customers in the AdventureWorksDW database.

You cannot copy or move a thicket file. To change the file name or create a copy of the file, open the file and save as to a new name.

We have a document library which consists of lots of documents. While attempting to rename one of the documents, we get the following error:
You cannot copy or move a thicket file. To change the file name or create a copy of the file, open the file and save as to a new name.

Cause:
This behavior occurs if both the following conditions exist:
•You modify the home page by using FrontPage 2003, and then save your changes.

•You try to rename the home page in FrontPage 2003.

When you save your changes to the Windows SharePoint Services home page after you modify it by using FrontPage 2003, FrontPage 2003 creates a down-level Vector Markup Language (VML) file for the quick launch toolbar. This down-level VML file creates thicket files that cause the home page and the thicket files to be dependent. Because FrontPage 2003 cannot perform a link fix up operation against thicket files, FrontPage 2003 prevents you from renaming the home page.

SharePoint doesn't support files that end with _file, and this "thicket" file is a matching ABC file and ABC_FILES folder set. Delete this misbehaving file and upload an .msg like a good SharePoint citizen - it'll open nicely in Outlook, and you'll actually be able to see / search / access any attachments within the email.

Workaround:
Use one of the following two methods to work around this problem:
•Rename the home page by using the Save As option on the File menu in FrontPage 2003.
Or
•In FrontPage 2003, enter the new name for the home page in the File name box, and then click Save.

If you have any queries/questions regarding the above mentioned information then please let me know. I would be more than happy to help you as well as resolves your issues.

Opening HTML Files in Sharepoint 2010

In SharePoint 2010 I have created a Library in which I have placed an Html document and related file system to go with the document.  Under Library Settings / Advance Settings I have selected (Open in Browser). However, when I click on the file to open it in SharePoint it does not open in the browser but opens up a dialogue box to save the file locally.

Requirements: We wanted the ability to open the HTML document directly within the browser.

Multiple Requirements:
1. upload html files to a sharepoint library: in document library we can add html files, but the problem is when i open that html file in the library a popup message box appears asking to save the file. is there a way to open these html files in a browser like documents are open in word.

2. Asking to save file when try to open it from sharepoint: When I try to open the files(.html,.xml.....) which are uploaded to sharepoint,Its not getting opened directly instead a pop up window to save the file is coming.

3. In a document library when I check out a Word document, I get prompted "You are about to check out ___" with the option to use Local Drafts folder.  I can then open the document from Local Drafts and upon saving, I get prompted to check in.

4. If you have converted Word document to HTML file and uploaded it to SharePoint.  Now I would like to make modification to the new HTML file and save it through SharePoint.  However, it is not possible because it the HTML file doesn't "save" option, only "save as" option.

Resolution:
By default, Sharepoint 2010 is blocking the ability to open HTML documents directly from a document library.

However this can be changed by adjusting the browser file handling option. The option is located here:

1. Central Admin\Application Management\Manage Web Applications.
2. Select General Settings for the specified web application
3. For Browser file handling, select permissive. The default is strict

Detailed Explanation as why it happens:

This is intentional behavior. In SP2010 Microsoft has tightened up security for people with contribute access. Previously, a malicious user could upload a file with script in it that would get run as whoever browses to the page ie. an admin. In 2010 where we have a javascript object model, this would be a big problem if we didn't have this restriction in place.
Browser File Handling
Specifies whether additional security headers are added to documents served to web browsers. These headers specify that a browser should show a download prompt for certain types of files (for example, .html) and to use the server's specified MIME type for other types of files.
Permissive Specifies no headers are added, which provides a more compatible user experience.
Strict Adds headers that force the browser to download certain types of files. The forced download improves security for the server by disallowing the automatic execution of Web content that contributors upload
